Airport Saviour Guide for When Traveling with Kids
Traveling with kids can be an adventure filled with excitement—but also a lot of challenges. Navigating airports with little ones by your side requires a bit of planning and the right tools to make the experience smoother. Here’s how you can tackle the common airport travel problems with practical solutions: Problem: "I can’t deal with the long lines and crowded airports while managing my toddler." Solution: Keep Your Hands Free for a Stress-Free Airport Experience Airports can be overwhelming with long security lines and busy crowds, making it difficult to manage both your bags and your child. One effective way to ease the process is by using a toddler carrier to keep your hands free. Make sure to check how to correctly use the carrier before your trip for maximum comfort and security. This way, you can focus on your essentials, easily navigate through crowded areas, and manage your luggage, all while keeping your toddler safe and close. Problem: "My toddler is restless and uncomfortable during the flight." Solution: Create a Cozy Travel Comfort Zone Help your toddler feel at ease by recreating a cozy, familiar environment. Bring a favourite blanket or stuffed toy from home and consider the comfort of a Stokke Jetkids Bedbox to help them stretch out. Noise-cancelling headphones with soothing music or white noise can also help them relax. All this can help make the flight more comfortable so your little one can settle in for a nap or quiet time. Problem: "Strollers are bulky, and it’s hard to juggle them with all my bags." Solution: Opt for Flexible Travel Gear While strollers are handy, they can be difficult to manage alongside your luggage. Consider a flexible and stylish option, like a leopard print toddler carrier , for hands-free convenience. This way, you can easily navigate tight spaces, keep your child close, and still have room to manage your travel gear. Problem: "I’m feeling stressed and overwhelmed with everything I need to manage." Solution: Be Prepared and Stay Flexible Traveling with kids can be overwhelming, but being well prepared can help. Pack all the essentials in advance—including snacks and entertainment and create a to-pack list so you don’t forget last-minute essentials. Giving yourself extra time for check-in, security, and boarding, and staying flexible if things don't go as planned, can make all the difference. When you have a carrier to keep your toddler close and calm, you’ll feel more in control. You can also more easily talk your little travel buddy through the new experiences you’re navigating and get them excited about the adventure to come. Traveling through airports with kids doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right preparation and tools, you can turn the airport experience into an enjoyable part of your adventure. By staying organized and keeping your child close and comfortable, you'll set the tone for a successful trip. Embrace the freedom that comes with staying hands-free and enjoy a more relaxed journey for both you and your little one.
Learn moreProtection: Sun Safety for little eyes
Many of us had the sun smart Slip, Slop, Slap message drummed into us from childhood. But are you aware of Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap? The message is to slip on some clothing and into the shade, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses. Why are sunglasses important for babies and toddlers? Sunglasses are important to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them. This is especially important for babies and children for whom overexposure to UV radiation can cause a predisposition to eye problems. Just as a baby’s skin is more vulnerable to the sun, their developing eyes also have an increased susceptibility to UV damage. The New Zealand Association of Optometrists (NZAO) says most of the eye damage caused by UV radiation builds up over a long period of time and cannot be reversed. So the sooner you start protecting your little one’s eyes from the sun, the lower their risk will be of ever developing future eye problems. “There is some evidence that daily exposure to UV radiation in very bright sunlight over many years may increase the risk of developing cataracts which cause a gradual clouding of the natural lens of the eye. Exposure may also increase the risk of macular degeneration, an eye condition resulting from damage to the retina.” In NZ and Australia, we have to be particularly careful as our peak summer UV levels are roughly 40% higher than those at comparable latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. That’s because Earth’s orbit is elliptical, which means the Southern Hemisphere is closer to the sun during our summer. The thickness of the ozone layer is also a factor as is our clearer air quality. How to choose sunglasses for little ones Treat sunglasses as a necessity, not just an accessory. Although they certainly can be a fun fashion accessory and look super cute on babies! You’ll want to find sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection, like the Izipizi range . Polarized lenses are also a bonus as they protect against glare, giving visual comfort. Opting for grey lenses also means they don’t distort but instead respect natural colours Durability is also key with kids' glasses. Izipizi’s ultra-flexible, BPA-free, and hypoallergenic frames are also great for sensitive skin. In addition, straight arms mean they will also adapt to your baby’s growth. Of course, it's easier said than done to keep sunglasses on a wriggly baby every time you head outside! That’s why Izipizi baby and kids sunglasses come with an optional ultra-flexible and adjustable silicone strap. This helps keep glasses on so they don’t get lost. Finding a comfortable fit will also make your little one happier to wear them. IZIPIZI offers three kids sunglass ranges: Baby for 0-9 months (head size 34-41 cm) Kids for 9-36 months (head circumference 40-47 cm) Kids+ for 3-5 years (head size 46-53 cm) Lead by example, if your children see you wearing sunglasses, they’re more likely to want to wear them too! Getting little ones to wear sunglasses not only protects their eyes now and for the future, it helps them develop habits that last for life. Don’t forget those other sun smart rules: Find shade — especially for babies under 6 months. Car sunshades and stroller sun covers are a good investment. Choose a wide-brimmed hat Try to limit your sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun's rays are most intense Dress kids in cool clothing with good coverage Use sunscreen daily, even on a cloudy day.

Learn moreHow to Choose a Car Seat
Which is the right seat for your little one? Choosing a car seat can feel overwhelming. Your choice is more than just a purchase; it's an investment in your child's safety and comfort. Are you looking for a capsule, a convertible, a booster seat or an all in one? And how do you know where to start? Buckle up as we lay out the different types of seat to help you figure out what’s right for your whānau. Capsule Car Seats Best for: Newborns to approx. 12 months (up to 13kg depending on the brand)What they are: Rear-facing, portable infant car seats that easily lift in or out of the car. Most of the capsules we sell clip onto a base (sold separately) that stays installed in your car. Others have a baseless install either by Isofix or car seatbelt. Why parents love them: If you choose a capsule that's compatible with your stroller, you can transfer your sleeping baby for car to stroller without waking them They're easy to carry with a handle Most work with a base that stays in the car - simple click and go. Things to consider: You’ll likely only use it for the first year. Weight matters – some are much easier to carry than others. Great options to compare: Nuna Pipa Next – lightweight (only 2.8kg) and super portable. Nuna Arra Flex – features three recline positions - including a near-flat 157° recline. Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 Pro – ergonomic recline, 360° base for easy loading. Nuna Pipa Urbn – ideal for swapping between cars or rideshares, it has built-in Isofix, no base required. Nuna Cari Next – this one is in a category all of its own - both a carrycot and car seat. The Cari has a three-point harness and connects to the Nuna Next Base in the car. Baby can lie peacefully at a full recline - the best position for a developing spine. The Cari can also connect to your stroller so you can move from home to car to pushchair without interrupting their sleep. Convertible Car Seats Best for: Birth to approx. 4 years (or longer depending on the seat)What they are: Seats that start rear-facing and convert to forward-facing as your child grows. Why parents love them: Cost-effective – you’ll use it for several years. Often more spacious and padded than a capsule. Things to consider: Not portable – it stays installed in the car. Some seats rotate on a base, so you can turn them towards the door to make buckling in easier Check your car - do you have Isofix points or do you need a seat that can be seat belt installed? Great options to compare: Nuna Todl Next – works with a rotating base for easy access. Nuna Rylo – built-in 360° rotation, no separate base required. Nuna Rava Next - seatbelt installed, and known for its simple installation, generous legroom, and plush comfort. Ideal for families who want a long-lasting seat without the need for a base or Isofix. All-in-One (Convertible + Booster) Best for: Birth to approx. 11–12 yearsWhat they are: Car seats that transition from rear-facing to forward-facing to booster seat. Why parents love them: One purchase that lasts for years. Ideal for parents who don’t want to keep upgrading. Things to consider: Not portable – stays in the car. No rotating options available. Great options to compare: Nuna Exec Next – rear-facing from birth, forward-facing to booster mode up to 148cm / 50kg. Britax One4Life Slim – rear-facing to booster mode up to 160cm / 54.4kg. Booster Seats Best for: 4+ years (or as per height and weight guidelines)What they are: Forward-facing seats that position the vehicle seatbelt properly across your child. Why parents love them: Simple to use and install. Gives older kids a good seat height and a view out the window. Often more compact. Things to consider: Only suitable once your child meets minimum size requirements. Great options to compare: Nuna Lumn – harnessed car seat that transforms to a belt positioning booster Nuna Aace Lx – adjustable height, recline, and side impact protection. Britax Skyline – affordable, comfortable, and lightweight. Axkid Up – has a patented raisable seat to elevate your child to better align with the vehicle seat belt Other Key Considerations When Choosing a Car Seat Car fit: Not all seats fit all vehicles – check for compatibility, especially if fitting multiple seats. Ease of use: Consider rotating seats if you struggle with lifting your child in and out. Installation method: Isofix is quicker and easier, but seatbelt installs offer flexibility for older vehicles or travel. However Isofix does have lower weight restrictions (generally around 18kgs). If a seat allows for both Isofix and seatbelt installation it can pay to opt for Vehicle Seat Belt installation as it eliminates having to switch installation method once weight limits are reached. Longevity: Weigh up whether you want a dedicated seat for each stage or one that adapts as your child grows. Need Help Choosing?
